Verisign's Sweet Automated Verification Process

Published September 1, 2004
We prefer to use Verisign for payment processing and secure site services. They have one of the most recognized brands on the Internet, which is important when convincing the online shopper that a site is secure. The other day I had to renew one of my server's secure certificates. When it comes to my server, that is never easy. Why? Because we have something called a Wild-card Certificate. Wild-card certs make it possible to secure multiple sites (domain names) on the same server. I just wanted to mention one improvement they made to their renewal and ordering system for this product. Verisign needs to confirm that your organization exists, one they used to do that was have a real person call the number associated with the business to verify a real person is there. With the power of Web services (stuff we at RB do all the time), they sent me an email asking to go to a specific page. I went to that page and it asked me to enter some of my information. Then it said I should expect a phone call. A few seconds later, it dialed my number and extension. It asked me a few questions and asked me to enter a code into the phone, a code that I submitted via the Web page earlier. I did that and it said thank you. Then the page refreshed and said I should expect a new call. It asked me to enter an additional code into the phone, a code that should now be on the Web page in front of me. So I did that as well, and presto - my company was verified. I personally find this cool and I am sure its saving Verisign nice money. The beauty of automation through Web services. :)

Yeah, today phone verification is one of the best ways to confront spammers and fraudsters.
